Treatment of Hernia: Catching-up with Changes
Choi Youn-Baik

Abstract
Hernia repair is the most commonly performed surgical procedure. While in the past, open surgery was the only option available for most patients diagnosed with hernia, nowadays the surgical treatment for hernia is much simpler and involves fewer risks. Due to recent modern treatment methods, most surgical professionals have opted to repair a hernia with a more "minimally invasive surgery." Much heated controversy has been generated about the best surgical treatment for groin hernia repair. Possible techniques have hard proponents as well as opponents. This is where the practice of evidence-based medicine is crucial. One should, closely monitor the long-term follow-up results of any new procedure, taking into account the lowest recurrence rate, and cost, while maintaining awareness of the patient¡¯s well being. The best treatment is probably the method that the surgeon knows well and does best. However, the advent of synthetic mesh has made the bridging of large gaps of tissues without tension possible. Tension loss repair of inguinal hernia using a laparoscope or other open methods seem to be the wave of the future.
